Radio Equipment

I own a lot of radios.
At this point there are probably 30+ handhelds floating around my office and trucks, along with everything from cheap analog HTs to high-end HF rigs that cost more than some used cars. Most of my daily carry radios over the years have leaned toward the higher-end side of the market.
For the last year though, the radio that has consistently ended up in my pocket has been the BTECH UV-Pro.
That honestly surprised me.
For people who spend time in the Idaho backcountry, work outdoors, train seriously, or just want communications gear that can take abuse, the first thing you start evaluating is usually durability and form factor. A radio can have every feature in the world, but if it’s awkward to carry, difficult to charge, or fragile, it eventually gets left at home.
The Details
The UV-Pro gets a lot of those practical considerations right:
- Solid IP-rated weather resistance
- USB-C charging
- Straightforward programming
- Good overall ergonomics
- Digital capabilities out of the box through the integrated KISS TNC modem
That last point is a bigger deal than most new radio users realize. Having APRS and digital functionality available without needing a pile of extra cables, adapters, or external hardware lowers the barrier to actually training with those tools.
I liked the handheld enough that I eventually installed the 50 watt mobile version in my truck as well.
Is it the most advanced radio on the market? No.
But part of building resilient communications capability is understanding the difference between gear that looks impressive online and gear that consistently gets carried, used, and trained with in the real world. The UV-Pro has earned a place in that category for me.
Affiliate disclosure
Full transparency: HXC Comms is now a BTECH affiliate partner.
At the moment, I’m still a small operation and I can’t realistically stock a massive inventory of radios and gear myself. Affiliate partnerships are one of the ways small businesses like mine can continue building training, content, classes, and community resources without turning everything into ads or paywalls.
If you purchase something through one of my BTECH links, I receive a small kickback from the sale at no additional cost to you.
I only plan to recommend gear I actually use, train with, or believe has a legitimate place in the communications space. Anyone who has followed HXC Comms for a while already knows I’m not interested in hype, influencer culture, or pretending every radio is “mission critical.”
Over time, I also plan to expand the HXC storefront with more of our own products, accessories, field gear, and curated equipment alongside the training and soft goods many of you already support.
